KGL Launches AI-Enabled Publishing Workflows
5 March 2026
KnowledgeWorks Global has unveiled a next-generation AI-enhanced publishing workflow, aimed at empowering scholarly publishers to navigate the increasing role of artificial intelligence in research communication. Developed within the KGL Smart Lab, this new framework embeds AI into editorial, production, and hosting environments, modernizing traditional publishing into smarter, policy-aware systems.
Facing demands for scalability, research integrity protection, and compliance with accessibility mandates, publishers are under pressure to adapt. The core of this launch is the upgraded KGL Smart Review platform, which incorporates AI-assisted capabilities into peer review and editorial processes. Features like human face recognition and problematic statement detection help identify risks, enhance research integrity checks, and relieve the manual workload of editorial teams.
In addition to integrity enhancements, KGL has rolled out AI-driven tools focused on improving accessibility and audience engagement. These tools automate the creation of alt text and plain-language summaries, seamlessly integrating accessibility and clarity into the publishing workflow.
KGL's approach seeks to better serve diverse communities, including researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the general public, while ensuring that organizations meet accessibility and compliance standards.
Hong Zhou, Vice President of Product Management at KGL, emphasized the necessity for cohesive AI infrastructure rather than isolated features, stating the goal is to embed AI throughout the publishing lifecycle to enhance human expertise, enforce policy, and ensure the delivery of trustworthy content for future discovery and licensing. With the enhanced Smart Lab capabilities, KGL aims to facilitate a transition to integrated systems that responsibly combine AI with human insight in the publishing landscape.
